Huddle (pre-shift)
Huddle (pre-shift): A pre-shift huddle is a short standing meeting the store manager runs before the doors open. A loss prevention huddle covers one behavior tied to one trigger, shows it on the floor, has associates answer on the spot, and names what to watch for today.
A pre-shift huddle is a short standing meeting the store manager runs before the doors open. A loss prevention huddle covers one behavior tied to one trigger, shows it on the floor, has associates answer on the spot, and names what to watch for today. A rotation card lists the behaviors so nobody has to improvise.
Why it matters in a store
Most stores already run a huddle. The question is whether loss prevention ever gets a turn in it. Of the ways a store communicates loss prevention, the huddle is the only one that happens daily, needs no budget, and comes from the person associates already listen to. A poster fades into the wall within a week. The most common way to waste a huddle is to cover everything: receipt checks, cart pushouts, drawer counts, and suspicious behavior in one breath leaves associates with nothing to do differently. The rule is one behavior, stated in the first minute, with a store example the crew remembers. The morning after any incident, while details are fresh, is the best huddle of the quarter.
How it shows up on the floor
- Register: “Every item crosses the scanner, and a second person signs every void.” The manager demonstrates at a lane.
- Receiving: “Count the pallet before you sign.” An associate explains what to do when the count is short.
- Sales floor: “Greet every customer with eye contact.” A pair role-plays the greeting and a description afterward.
- Any known repeat offender or aggressive customer: “Observe, report, never confront, never chase.” The manager asks who to call and where to go if it turns loud.
