Refund fraud

Refund fraud: Refund fraud is obtaining a refund or store credit the store never owed. Customers return stolen or used goods, present fake or altered receipts, or claim items never arrived. Employees process refunds with no sale behind them to a card they control.

Refund fraud is obtaining a refund or store credit the store never owed. From outside, it looks like a customer returning stolen or used goods, presenting a fake or altered receipt, or claiming an order never arrived. From inside, it looks like an employee processing a refund with no sale behind it to a card or gift card they control.

Why it matters in a store

Refund fraud sits on both sides of the theft line, which is why it belongs in both internal theft and external theft training. It is also the point where organized retail crime meets the register: a booster who cannot find a fence can walk stolen goods back to the service desk and turn them into store credit, and the store pays for its own merchandise twice. A loose returns policy is not customer service if it funds the crew sweeping the shelves. The controls are procedural and quiet: who can authorize a refund without a receipt, where the override gets logged, a second person on every no-receipt return, and an exception report that flags refunds outside the sale’s original tender. Associates follow the procedure and call a manager when it cannot be followed. They do not accuse the customer.

How it shows up on the floor

The register and refund procedures are in retail employee theft awareness training, and the pause-the-sale habit that applies at the same counter is in gift card scam training for cashiers. See also sweethearting and gift card scam, or browse the scams and fraud hub.
