Total retail loss
Total retail loss: Total retail loss is a framework that widens the lens beyond shrink to every cost a loss program can influence: damaged and wasted goods, markdowns, cash losses, fraud, workplace injuries, and the labor and controls spent responding to all of them.
Total retail loss is a framework that widens the lens beyond shrink. Shrink counts missing inventory. Total retail loss counts every cost a loss program can influence: damaged and wasted goods, markdowns, cash losses, fraud, workplace injuries, and the labor spent responding to all of them, whether the loss is known or unknown, malicious or accidental.
Why it matters in a store
A shrink number on its own makes loss prevention look like a theft department. Total retail loss makes it a business function. When a store manager can see that a wasted pallet of produce, a stack of unrecorded markdowns, and a stolen case of detergent are all loss, the conversation with finance and operations changes. Budget requests stop competing with sales and start reading as margin protection. The framework also keeps a retailer honest about what it can and cannot fix. Some loss is the cost of being open, such as a reasonable rate of damage in receiving. Some is preventable with a procedure change, and some needs an investigation. Sorting loss into those buckets is the work the framework is built for.
How it shows up on the floor
- Register: a refund processed without a sale, a gift card loaded for a scam victim, or cash short at the end of the drawer count.
- Receiving: product crushed on the truck, a case signed for that never arrived, or a vendor credit nobody claimed.
- Sales floor: expired stock thrown out, a display damaged by a customer, or an associate hurt lifting a case.
- Back office: the hours a manager spends writing incident reports and reviewing video.
Each line is a cost, and each one has an owner who can move it.
